Review: Clear and easy-to-follow directions! This great book is filled with superb ideas, methods and simple recipes for veggie eaters. This book serves vegetarians well by offering truly tasteful, healthy recipes that we can enjoy either as a main course or side dish while not spending hours in the kitchen. Well done! This cookbook is a complete, comprehensive guide to cooking vegetarian.

I have a large variety of cookbooks, but this one offers many different recipes and ways to try new foods or new preparations of familiar foods. I’ll go months sometimes without looking at this book. Every time I go back to it, I’m impressed by how good it is.

Not only does this book have great recipes, but it will totally add ideas to your cooking arsenal.

This book is truly useful for those that are interested in becoming vegetarians, or even vegans. It’s definitely one of the first books I would recommend to those moving from meat to meatless. There are a couple of others that you could also read and gain a wealth of knowledge and recipes from:

221 New Vegetarian Dishes

Delicious, Healthy And Easy - Tom’s Vegetarian Cookbook: Easy Yummy And Nutritional Vegan Recipes

The Black Art Of Cooking: The Raw Truth

The Golden Age Vegetarian Cook Book

Vital Facts about Foods: Included: 200 + Longevity recipes & 250 Food Analyses References

For each of these books you can rely on, I love vegetables, and everything I have tried in these books was just great. In fact, between them all, I have really come to rely on them book not only for recipes, but for reference as well.

I have really enjoyed this book. I look at it almost everyday. The recipes are loved by even non vegetarians. My family’s favorite is the Ziti Lasagna. In a word - fantastic!

Lots of easy and yummy veggie recipes, and lots of fun stories about food and family. I really enjoyed it, and the recipes are basic, fun and the ingredients are easy to find in everyday stores.

This is a very good book and you’ll make many wonderful meals using it.

Another that I found that I really like was

221 New Vegetarian Dishes

You will enjoy both! Cheers!i have tried quite a few of these recipes and were surprisingly VERY GOOd…not to mention i have lost some weight!! YAY!I was looking forward to receiving this cookbook based upon the majority of other reviews. I was disappointed to find it has the most basic recipes that can be found in any cookbook or don’t even require a cookbook. Examples: Fried Potatoes - Starchy white potates, oil for frying, salt for seasoning. Spinach Salad - 3 cups spinach, balsamic dressing, sliced mushrooms, hard boiled egg. And a chocolate chip cookie recipe that can be found on the back of any bag of chocolate chips. Nothing new or innovative here. Also, there’s no nutritional values for the recipes, but if you consider french fries and chocolate chip cookies “vegetarian cooking,” you may not be interested in the nutritional content of the recipes. Unfortunately, I think this cookbook will end up in a garage sale or donated to charity.

Review: Many great food ideas. Some of the portions described were hard to find in local supermarkets but, nonetheless, we were able to adjust to fit what we had. A lot of the recipes we’ve found are now mainstays in our meals. Dishes are quick and easy. I wish there were pictures of the dishes in the book. You have to add your own touch of flavor. This cookbook is a great choice for the family wanting to either expand their menus or find nutritious vegetarian choices. Most of the recipes are easily adapted, have options/choices to make additional dishes and most are kid-friendly. A great addition to our collection and helpful with a newly vegetarian teenager. Lots of interesting twists on old favorites. Well written with easy to follow instructions. My one year old son likes the recipes and so do my husband and I!As a family that eats very little meat, this cookbook has really done wonders for us! Directions are simple, recipes are great for everyday use, and we have yet to make something we haven’t loved! I highly recommend it, and other books by Nava Atlas. She knows a lot about cooking for families.

Many books on vegetarian cooking are so pretentious! Who has time to make something that takes three hours and requires a culinary degree, not to mention exotic (and expensive) ingredients? Also, just because something is vegetarian does not mean it is healthy. Nava takes care of all of this with easy to make, quick meals that include ingredients that most households already use and have. Also, she keeps the fat content down, and lists nutritional information for each recipe.

Great book for vegetarians and omnivores alike!

Review: This is the kind of book that a college kid might actually use to make something healthy to eat. Very practical and undemanding real food.I really enjoyed the recipes in this cookbook as they were very easy to make, as well as cheap. However, some of the portion sizes seemed to be a little off–meals for “1-2″ were pretty huge portions to eat in one sitting, so I would strongly suggest sharing or storing them as leftovers. Also, it was mentioned before, but this book would benefit greatly benefit from a nutritional analysis on each recipe, as I ended up having to calculate all of that myself from each of the ingredients. Overall, though, a good choice for vegetarians on a budget, especially when you’re craving comfort food!I’ve been vegetarian for 5 years now and have accumulated a collection of different vegetarian cookbooks over the years. Most of them make several fundamental assumptions: 1)you have plenty of money to spend on difficult-to-find spices and rare items 2) you have the time to buy and prepare these items (chopping things from hand and other meticulous work). Fact is, it ain’t so for most college students. We’re busy and we’re on a budget. Healthy food choices are limited– especially if we’re vegetarian.

I’ve never had to cook for myself until moving into my apartment, and let me tell you, this cookbook is my Culinary Bible! It’s great because it offers fast, cheap, healthy, meat-free, and yummy small-serving recipes (I recommend the Twice As Nice Stew yum…). What more could a college vegetarian want?

I give it three thumbs up. :)A nice, no nonsense book with good easy to follow recipes. Catchy illustrations might help capture the interest for the younger readers! This is a great book to cook out of when my husband is traveling and it’s just me & the kids. With kids, I need healthy, not lots of left overs, quick, and variety. My husband and I both have experience cooking, and like books like this as they give us new ideas to spring our newest creations off of. These “begginer” recipe books are also great for more experienced, creative chefs. We aren’t vegetarians, but there are recipes that meat could be added into. It is hard to come by great vegetable recipes and recipes with lots of healthy ingredients like fiber and vitamins. So this book is great health wise. I’ve found a few good veggie recipe websites, but this book is also a must! I will be ordering more for gifts. I wish the author would combine this one with the original in a binder type book, so it would be easier to leave open on the counter.

Review: Great book came highly recommended in the vegetarian community can’t wait to start cooking out of it!!This cookbook has been great. I ordered it when I was 8 weeks pregnant and it has opened my eyes on protein and vitamin content of different foods. The recipes (especially dinner) are incredible. I have not tried one dish that I didn’t love. I eat fish and dairy so I am not a true vegitarian and this book has suggestions to add dairy to recipes and has given me new ideas on what to eat with fish. I will use this after I have the baby because the recipes are excellent. I have tons of vegetarian cookbooks having been a vegetarian for over 18 years and this if definitely one of my favorites. The recipes are easy to follow and taste great. Being pregnant, I love the fact that each recipe comes with nutritional information so I know just how much protein and iron I’m getting in a meal. There are several recipes that are quick and easy to make and also several that can be frozen and reheated later. This is now the first cookbook I reach for. My husband who is a vegetarian in training loves the meals too! There is a lot of variety and most of the recipes don’t require a lot of exotic ingredients that you can only find in specialty stores as is the case with some vegetarian cookbooks. You’ll enjoy these recipes whether you are pregnant, nursing or just love good vegetarian food! Can’t speak highly enough about this cookbook. I buy tons of books from Amazon and have never written a review but this cookbook was too good to leave unreviewed!I love this book! I use it constantly. Its full of great information and ideas to help pamper and nourish pregnant mommies and their families. With all the yummy recipes, containg ways to makes them vegan, as well as other variations to change them up for a slight difference, there isn’t a better vegetarian book, or even pregnancy book out there for pregnant women and mothers! It gives nutritional information and menu ideas for each tri-mester, post partum, and breastfeeding stages. And then these recipes are excellent for none of theses stages too! The recipes also state if they are good for freezing which is much needed information to start stockpiling those frozen meals before morning sickness sets in, as well as before baby is born to guarantee healthy meals and less take out! My vegan sister borrowed it when she was pregnant with her first, and loved everything about it. Then when she realized it was from Mothering Magazine editor, said “That explains it all!” I will be buying it for her for her birthday!

Review: Quick Fix is much more then a quick fix, its a keeper! This book is truly useful for those that are interested in becoming vegetarians, or even vegans but are also busy and always in a rush (ok, that’s most of us!). It covers a vast range of topics including setting up meals that are not only easy and fast, but healthy. Good healthy veggie meals are far better then a National Health care program. On the other hand, if its your spouse that wants to become a vegetarian or a vegan, this book will help put your mind at ease. It’s definitely one of the first books I would recommend to those moving from meat to meatless and who don’t want to spend hour in the kitchen. For each of these books you can rely on, I love vegetables, and everything I have tried in these books was just great. In fact, between them all, I have really come to rely on them book not only for recipes, but for reference as well. The book is well laid out, very easy to read, and very easy on the eye. I have made four recipes with mixed results. The Jasmine Rice Fantasy surely could not have been tested because I needed to add an extra 3 cups of water to the rice and it took over 45 minutes just to cook using a skillet as per the instructions. It was very tasty but perhaps the author made the dish with leftover rice and guessed at the instructions for using dry rice. This leaves me wondering about the other recipes. I do not recommend buying this cookbook. I have many vegetarian cookbooks and many so-called time-saving cookbooks, but this one really lives up to it’s name. She does a terrific job of walking you through everything in the introduction too. I have made several recipes and all turned out great - in 30 minutes or less!!!I really enjoy this cookbook. I am the type of girl that can burn water. Recipes are easy and always a hit! If I had been able to check this out at the library, I wouldn’t have bought it. Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet by Nava Atlas is much better (for me) and I’ve made many more dishes from it. In addition, the Atlas book gives me ideas to take off from hers and experiment since the recipes are simple and make use of some prepared products such as salsa. If you have to buy one or are beginning to explore vegetarian recipes, pick the Atlas book.

Review: The recipes taste good, it is fine research put to taste! I am using it to lower my blood sugar levels and it is working about .2 of a point per month and I am almost to normal. This is so much better than insulin resistance and all the medications tried. I feel better and better. Smart stuff.I bought this book so I could try to learn to eat vegetarian part of the time, for better health, to lose weight, and maybe actually enjoy it as opposed to just eating salads and getting tired of it. There are some good recipes in this book! We are so hooked on the buckwheat pancakes especially (these are savory ones, not the kind you put maple syrup on, and probably quite different than any pancakes you have had before). Also the quinoa kasha. There are a lot of good salads and some main dishes too. Hopefully you have a natural foods store handy though because some of the ingredients aren’t too mainstream. (Sprouts, Whole Foods or at least Trader Joe’s or the like) There is some basic nutrition info in the front of the book which I haven’t gotten around to reading, so no comments about that - I just like the recipes.I purchased this cookbook after my father was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I quickly fell in love with it. Not only is it beautifully put together, with many vegan as well as vegetarian recipes, but the food really is fantastic. I haven’t had a single dud recipe from this book. The recipes rely on a lot of fresh produce and whole grains, so are good for anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle. I have no blood sugar issues myself, but after eating from this book for a couple weeks, I felt great. I’m ordering my own copy today, because this has become one of my favourite healthy, vegetarian cookbooks. I really appreciate, too, that the book does not rely on processed ingredients or trying to imitate or substitute for meat, but instead focuses on whole foods and international flavours.

The reason I haven’t given the book five stars is this: There are some exotic ingredients which may be hard to find if you’re in a small town, and that can be frustrating. I do think that most of the more exotic ingredients can be found on the internet or substituted for if you’re a confident cook. (We ended up buying a case of organic soba noodles — something we cannot find locally — just to make one of our favourites from the book, the Avocado, Pickled Ginger, and Tofu Soba Noodle Salad). We also found that the recipes were not guaranteed to keep my father’s blood sugar from spiking after meals so it may be worth heeding the other reviews about the recipes being low GI, but not necessarily low GL, if your diabetes is serious.

In a nutshell? I own a lot of cookbooks, and I love to cook. This book is full of fresh, healthy, delicious, and easy recipes anyone can enjoy without feeling deprived.i love this book! There are great recipes that are easy to prepare and very delicious.Lots of very good information. Haven’t finished reading the information part and haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but they look good.

Review: My mom bought this book for me when I became vegetarian. I have to say that as a college student who works two jobs and has a tight budget, this cookbook is a goldmine! Every recipe is easy to do and the ingredients are easy to substitute for vegan meals. I love this book. The chapter devisions (bfast, lunch, dunner ect) make it SO easy to find a meal to eat or a dish for a get together. My roommate often used this book as well! LOVE it and cannot stress how awesome this book is for new vegs or those of us on a time and budget limit!gift for teen nephew, i think it did the trick, he actually has tried some more vegiesPurchased this for a 13 year old boy who loves cooking…the receipes are easy, delicious and also perfect for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. He loves this book as does his mother!I returned this cookbook after looking through it. I’d been hoping for recipes that use combinations of natural ingredients to make a complete protein, such as corn and beans. I do not cook with tempeh or tofu; I use milk, eggs, and butter, but am leaning towards a vegetarian, not vegan diet. My favorite meatless cookbook is Meatless Meals in Twenty Minutes by Karen Levin.I bought this for my granddaughter for Christmas along with a frying pan, spatula, and crock pot that have never cooked meat. She was thrilled.

Review: WoW!!! This is a great cookbook for veggies who love Italian (and who does not?)!

350 great meals, and wonderful tastes to enjoy….if you need some ideas for your veggie kitchen, this will give you great ones.

I found a little known book that is also a great help to veggies in the kitchen, by a guy named Tom, who must be some sort of master at it, you MUST give it a read, its great!!!

Delicious, Healthy And Easy - Tom’s Vegetarian Cookbook: Easy Yummy And Nutritional Vegan Recipes

Enjoy!I purchased this book for my brother who is a strict vegetarian. Growing up in an Italian family with wonderful cooks we enjoy recipes we’re familiar with and have grown up enjoying. This book contains an exceptionl large collection of recipes. The only negative is that it contains no photographs. This doesn’t concern me at all, but my brother likes the photos. If the lack of photos is unimportant to you, then you will not find a better source for Italian vegetarian recipes. This is a great book! I lost it in my recent divorce and it was one of the few books I had to go buy again. The salads and pastas stand out. It’s well-written and all the recipes are really quite simple.Being raised 1st generation Italian, I had some problems finding some of the old authentic recipes my family used to cook. Not any longer. This book brought me home. I love, love, love it and every time I have a dinner party, this is the book I turn to for a special meal that my guests rave about for weeks.

This is by far, my favorite cookbook. I am a vegan, but have no problems replacing the cheese and egg ingredients, without sacrificing the taste.

Jack Bishop is a genius.

Author, The Fast Food CrazeFor medical reasons, my husband and I had to stop eating meat and we were completely lost as to what we could eat besides veggies. I stumbled across this cookbook and purchased it for a friend who’s an established vegetarian. After I gave it to her, I found myself reading through it. I love it so much, I decided to purchase a copy for myself. The recipes are easy to make (and I’m a horrible cook), the selections are quite broad (especially when you’re clueless as to what to fix) and the manner in which the book is organized makes it easy to follow (all the pizzas are together). I highly recommend this book regardless of your status as a vegetarian: novice or experienced.

Review: Dang, I was really hoping this book would have more “meat” and potato recipes, you’d think right?!? Why are there so many desserts and salads? I’ll admit the Fresh Strawberry Pie sounds good, especially being raw and all, but gosh darn it! I wanted like mounds of seitan recipes, cutlets, lots of burgers and recipes on just about every way to prepare potatoes..hey, there’s only one red potato recipe!?! Robin Robertson’s cookbooks are great, I love Vegan Fire & Spice, but this book wells up a few tears… I love a vegetarian option once in a while for a healthier meal, but I’m not always so hot on everything tofu based. This recipe book is great because it combines tofu meals with vegetable meals, so you can really find something to your liking.I received this cookbook as a gift about six years ago, and I have almost worn the poor thing out. It’s without a doubt my favorite cookbook that I have (and I have many), and I use it several times a week. At this point I have several of our favorite recipes memorized.

Regardless of whether or not you’re a vegetarian (my husband is not), this book is a must have.I loved my meat and potatoes before I became vegetarian and this is a great book to try and bring back all my original favorites in a more humane way. A lot of fun, really well written, a great addition to any chef’s collection - meat eater and vegetarian alike!I own a lot of vegan cookbooks and have owned this for quite a few years. This is the cookbook I use the most and the one I always refer to when trying to think up something new to cook. The recipes are very easy and always delicious….

Highly recommended….I wish there were a Meat and Potatoes II book–that is how much I like and I use this one.

Review: For students or not this is a great book filled with superb ideas, methods and simple recipes for the person on the go - you don’t have to be a student; this book serves vegetarians well by offering truly tasteful, healthy recipes that we can enjoy either as a main course or side dish while not spending hours in the kitchen. 142 fast and easy recipes for all kinds of vegetarian delights, breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, pastas and stirfries. It also provides our cookbook library a great comprehensive reference book for a variety of topics from learning more about no-so-commonly used veggies to tried and true techniques in creating the perfect accompaniments. A nice touch with this book is that every recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. Also each recipe has suggestions for what to pair the dish with and on what page to find it. Well done! This cookbook is a complete, comprehensive guide to cooking vegetarian.

Very good for a student or someone living on low funds (like most of us these days!), simple, easy, healthy and fast meals without meat.

And tasty too!

Another rare find that will suit any veggie cook is Venus’s book, that I really recommend and use each day:

221 New Vegetarian DishesDon’t believe “one” star review. I’m a senior citizen and have been a vegetarian for over 3 decades. I’ve had alot of cookbooks but I hate cooking. This cookbook fits me to a “T”. I absolutely love it. I bought this cookbook when I was a graduate student, and I found it an invaluable reference. It’s perfect for someone on a budget who’s interested in healthy vegetarian meals. Everything makes one or two servings, and none of the recipes call for outrageous or huge lists of ingredients. The recipes are delicious whether you’re a vegetarian or not. And many can be easily adapted to include meat. I’m no longer a student, but I still find that this is one of the cookbooks I use most frequently. I owned the previous edition and used it till the pages fell out. I bought the most current edition and it’s well loved, too. I’ve given this book as a gift many times and truly recommend it highly. Some recepies turned out really good and I was very happy with this book, but then I kept trying other recepies that were tasteless…so I have mixed feelings. I like the design, it’s small and easy to read. I just wish all recepies were good and tasty
