Review: Can you say “Beans and Cornbread?” The book has fun and do-able recipes. Great for those classic movies with a group of friends who enjoy the same. I have bought a couple for gifts and it’s entertaining just going through the book and reading the recipe titles.Lots of good recipes and that means GOOD EATING!!! A+ for the book…has lots of pictures too!Who knew there was a right meal to eat with a certain movie? For people who like good movies and great food, this is the cookbook to have. As another reviewer has said, this is the companion book to the tbs dinner and a movie weekly show. I am a big fan of the show and will actually make these recipes to watch with the movies. Some of my favorite movie and recipe combinations from this book are: The Cutting Edge, The Breakfast Club, The Outsiders, Fargo, Groundhog Day, and too many more to count. Hopefully, in a few years they will release another edition featuring even more of their wit, movies, and recipes. Chef Claud Mann has turned cinematic cuisine into a television art form on his popular TBS Superstation weekly program, “Dinner & A Movie”. Now with Claud Mann’s TBS Superstation Dinner & A Movie Cookbook, he has brought together 100 of his favorite recipes in this third edition of an enduringly popular cookbook. From Beetlejuice - Dearly Departed Sole; Sleepless in Seattle - An Eclair to Remember; and U.S. Marshals - We always Get Our Manicotti; to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off - Can’t Go To School, I Falafel; Tootsie - What’s Under Your Skirt Steak; and Conspiracy Theory - It’s All In Your Headcheese, the individual recipes are served up with an on-air wit and an in-kitchen wisdom. If you like to combine watching movies with great do-it-yourself cooking, then Claud Mann’s TBS Superstation Dinner & A Movie Cookbook is the one for you!

Review: I’ve been getting into family-themed cookbooks lately and purchased Jamie’s Dinners having looked at it many times in the bookstore. Made The Ultimate Burger and Chips (p.6) last night. Prior to this recipe, I used the master recipe from another well-known cookbook. I had always received the usual: “thanks mom, that was good.”

My family came to me after having Jamie Oliver’s burger dinner and said: “We’d Like to Thank JAMIE OLIVER”. That was a first! It was one of those devour-experience-swoon kind of experiences. If it’s any indication of what the cookbook offers, it is a very good start indeed.

The burger/fries preparation was different to what I was accustomed to. I wondered if the burgers were going to hold up to the heat because the patties (fries were parboiled) had several wet ingredients introduced to it. They came out perfectly moist and flavorful and had minimal shrinkage in the pan. These burgers stayed flat instead of morphing into round pucks in the pan like most burger recipes.

It was a pleasure to prepare this recipe - I’m of the camp that looks at a recipe and, to use Jamie Oliver’s word, - uses a “glug” here a “glug” there - this is the kind of recipe book that has an easygoing but basic straightforward approach to cooking and isn’t whacking you on the head for “perfection”. One doesn’t feel the need to fret or worry about how it’s going to turn out. It turns out all good and to me that is the essence of the family meal experience. This is my ultimate favorite in recipe books. The recipes are easy and the instructions perfect. Jamie is one of the best chef’s of his day. He just keeps surprising us with everything he does. These days he’s gone organic and is gardening is own vegetables and fruit…excellent. I have other books by him too but this one I really like because the recipes are soooo easy and there are so many ideas for variation. Well done Jamie (once again)! This is a great, fun book. It really captures Jamies love of cooking, and presents it in a way that isnt hard to understand or intimidating at all for the novice cook. The recipes are very relaxed, the presentations are real looking in the photos. and there are photos of everything in the book..I sat down and read through the whole book like it was a novel. The only reason i gave four stars is that i tend to agree with another reviewer who said some of the ingredients arent readily available to us here in the US. I personally dont live in a town with a fresh food market, although i wish i did! All told, i was certainly inspired to try serveral of the recipes right away..yum! It gave me a new perspective on what i buy in the grocery store-fresh is best! This was a gift for my daughter’s birthday. She tells me she loves this cookbook!i got this book a few years ago when i first wanted to cook professionally. i am now a dinner chef at a cafe, and this is my go-to cookbook when i cant think of the last dinner special or salad for the night. everything is presented in an easy to follow, throw together style, and you rarely have need for a mesuring device other than your hands. i dont think ive made any recipe in this book that i havent liked. i have bought this book as a present on a few occassions for cooks of all levels. i definately recommend this book to anyone.

Review: This set includes a book with recipes from various inns and restaurants in North America (Canada, Bermuda, United States). That might just inspire a romantic getaway since you’ll feel like you know these inns after making their dishes. An index with contact information for each contributing inn is located in the back of the book.

The music is classical and well-chosen to be suitable background sound for couple cooking. Each piece is performed by the San Francisco String Quartet, which was founded by Sharon O’Connor herself back in 1975. Listeners will enjoy well-known classical tunes with this selection.

Each recipe feels like a romantic dinner just by reading it. The ingredients are straight-forward items you’d find in nearly any grocery market, but the steps to make those ingredients into a real meal will take more effort than your usual Hamburger Helper. It will be worth the work. The most important part of the cooking process is that you and your better half will be together, enjoying the music and recipes together.

I’ll admit, I’m one of those people who relishes in spending just as much time preparing a meal as devouring it. Not everyone feels that way though, even if you are cooking alongside the one you love accompanied by gentle classical music. Overall, this is a darling idea and a well-designed set. I think it is a uniquely thoughtful wedding gift and a sweet present that encourages more “quality” time in the kitchen with the one you love.

I gave this set four out of five stars because as nice as this set is, it does take a leap of faith to try recipes from a book marketed on its romantic appeal. This cookbook and CD offer a wonderful way to bring romance into the home. I found the recipes to be completely accessible and fun to make. The music is lovely and soothing. The perfect duo to use for romatic occasions! The CD of classical music is great, but the recipies are a little high-scale for the average cook and not very practical for the average couple. However, if you enjoy gourmet cooking, this is the book for you.

Review: I have this cookbook and I love it and want to buy it for another couple. The recipes are really fun, very good, and well organized. But $99– what the heck? Doesn’t anyone sell a new copy of this for less??I was delighted that the timing and food worked out so well. I typically have a tough time serving everything hot at the same time. While we were enjoying our dinner, the poached pears were simmering on the stove. Fantastic! We barely made it through the first course. Just reading the recipes aloud to one another set our buns on fire. A saucy melange of ingredients, arrayed ever so sensually on the table before us, made this a VERY SPECIAL NIGHT. A little simmer, then a rolling boil! Here’s some advice: Have your lover keep the cooking mits on… Looking forward to future editions with: cooking for one, cooking for 3, and cooking for groups recipes. Try the spicy wraps! This book really brought my boyfriend and I into the kitchen together. Now, every meal is a pleasure instead of work (he even cooks me dinner a few nights a week)! We’ve learned to take time and enjoy it. Cooking is fun and every moment together should be just that. Pay close attention when you’re told to toast your date while cooking. Romance in the kitchen can happen thanks to Martha!my new husband and i adore this book! i have given it as a gift to so many of our couple friends. the pages are worn and spattered with food as we fight over the book while cooking all the delicious meals together. my husband, who doesn’t like to cook, loves preparing these meals with me! he loves the way it all comes together at the end, and we dont have to determine who does what, its all detailed for chef 1 and chef 2. we have had so many wonderfully romantic and fun nights together thanks to this book. my only complaint is that there’s not a dinner dates 2, 3, 4 etc. we are almost done with this book and would love to buy more!

Review: As a single working mom, this cookbook has been a lifesaver. Before I added this cookbook to my collection the meal selections at home usually ended up alternating between pizza and frozen dinners. My challenge was always the planning side - what will I make - as well as having the ingredients on hand and having something on the table within 30-45 minutes of arriving home.

By following the menus in this book, the shopping (which I also HATE) is simple, and even if a particular recipe doesn’t appeal to me or my son, it offers me the idea and I can easily substitute one of my own favorites.

The monotony of alternating between one or two “old standbys” are over, and both my son and I enjoy having home cooked, balanced meals. I agree with one other reviewer about the large numbers of recipes that call for instant rice or other processed foods. However, I recognize this as a trade-off to allow for quick preparation. I often substitute with the long cooking varieties when I have the extra time. I recognize the true value here is on the planning side - having the menus laid out along with the shopping lists is well worth making some adjustments in the recipes. I’m not one who tends to follow recipes exactly anyway — I treat them more as “inspiration and guidelines”.

Also, the seasonal changes are reasonable if not perfect — it really depends on your location on whether the specific produce will be fresh for you locally at that time, but the seasonal changes are as much about what you’ll be craving (i.e. more lighter entrees in summer with more “comfort food” in the winter meals).

One comment on the format of the book — it would be great if they tabbed the sections so that you can easily find the correct week’s menus and shopping lists. I’ve actually added tabs to mine and it makes it much more functional.I have had this book for about 3 months now, so far using the “Winter” recipes.

The concept is good: Gather a year’s worth of recipes together, split them up into seasonal sections, and create shopping lists. Give advance notice for the next day’s meals, and prepare ingredients ahead of time. For someone who has a difficult time menu planning, I thought this book would be my answer.

But the directions are not so good. Some directions will have you cook pork chops until you could resole your shoes with them. Some will tell you to bring the ingredients of a soup to a boil, but omit the part about adding water. Some will include ingredients, yet never tell you what to do with them. Some directions will tell you an important step, but only at the end of the recipe, when it’s too late. Some have incorrect cooking times, leading to undercooked/overcooked meals.

Then there’s the cream-of-something soup recipes. 43 cans for the year. 18 cans of cream-of-something for the Spring section alone! Before deciding on the week’s recipes, I scan the ingredients for C-o-?’s, and cross those recipes right off the list.

Of course taste is subjective. Maybe you would like a dish with cream-of-mushroom, a pint of sour cream, 2 cups of cheese, 1/2 cup of butter and some hash brown potatoes. It was nearly deadly for my family. Gag reflex for my 3.5 year old, and doubled-over gas-filled intestinal pain for us.

Some recipes are unnecessary for a busy family. My first go at the book was Sloppy Joes with Stovetop Baked Beans. In the interest of time and money, I skipped the ingredient list and bought a can of Sloppy Joe mix and a can of Baked Beans.

Some recipes are good. We liked “Mom’s” Meat Loaf and Mexican Lasagna for instance.

If you get this book: read, re-read, re-re-read the recipes and make sure you make notes and fix the omissions and errors before starting. Use your own common cooking sense: if the recipe calls for you to cook chicken breasts, stuffed with cheese and topped with spaghetti sauce, for 1 hour, you might want to adjust that a bit so you don’t end up with dried-out, tasteless boiled chicken with cheese melted right out of it, sitting in watery spaghetti sauce. And if you like cream-of-whatever soup, then get your casserole dish ready… you’re going to need it.I’ve used this cookbook about six weeks now, in one way or another. Some weeks I follow their plan, some I just use a couple of recipes from it. So far, the vast majority of the recipes have been hits with my family, and I am amazed at how inexpensive the meals work out to be, even following the weekly plan. I really recommend this book!I am constantly trying to decide what to make for dinner. It seeems like we always have the same things. I needed new ideas and new recipes to use. My neighbor had bought the recipe book “What’s for Dinner?” She said I could borrow it. It has a complete menu for each week completed with the recipes for each item. Each menu consists of a full course meal, (including dessert!) I used it for a week and loved it! I did not have to think about it any more, and I had all the ingredients I needed because I took the shopping list with me to the store. If you are not a creative cook, and do not have the time to plan your own meals and menus, I highly reccomend it!!I was very disappointed with this cookbook. It claims to use fresh, seasonal foods, then has you using tomatoes in spring and instant white rice (along with many other prepackaged, processed “foods”). Maybe tomatoes are a spring veggie in California (which is where the authors live), but they’re a _summer_ veggie here in Michigan! I guess if you’re so busy that you can only take 30 minutes to cook dinner and don’t mind eating less nutritive food, this might be a good cookbook for you, but if you want truly fresh, seasonal, good-tasting, REAL food recipes, buy _Simply in Season_ by Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert instead.

Review: This book is easy to cook from, but I don’t find the recipes very flavorful and there for do not use it as much as my other cookbooks. This is a good book from Rachael Ray. It has good recipes but I expected a lot more pictures.this book is awesome. Although I don’t care for Rachel Ray in person (something about her voice and the whole EVOO thing) she is a great cook. This book has so many ideas for so many types of settings; from cook-and-go to formal sit-down dinners. There is something for everyone. No frills, just good solid recipes and lots of them. Reveiced in good condition and it is a great book. Already went thru and marked the must makes.Having watched Rachel Ray’s 30-Minute Meals, but having used none of her cookbooks, I wanted to find her best and most comprehensive cookbook….and this must be it! My husband and I are so pleased with the meals that we’ve tried. He used to make gentle fun of her…and now he says, “I trust Rachel Ray…these are excellent recipes.”

Our favorite recipes include:

-Mediterranean Chicken with Saffron Couscous (amazing! our new chicken favorite)

-Greek Style Garlic Shrimp and Orzo

-Smoky Turkey Shepherd’s Pie

-Pasta with Roasted Eggplant Sauce

-Pumpkin Pasta with Sausage and Wild Mushrooms

-Turkey, Tomatillo, and Bean Burritos

There is some repetition, with variations of master recipes, but some of the variations were the ones I wanted to try (e.g. Greek Style Garlic Shrimp with Orzo versus the master recipe, which was a straight-forward Italian pasta with Shrimp).

Most of the recipes take me about 45 minutes to make, since I don’t have everything out in perfect order and since I prefer to let ingredients simmer and mingle a bit more, but I don’t mind. I’d rather enjoy both the process of cooking and the pleasure of eating rather than rushing through it.

In a word, the recipes are “Yum!” I got this on sale, for around $15, and it is definitely the best money I’ve ever spent on a cookbook. There aren’t a lot of glossy photos, and it’s not fancy, but the quality and sheer quantity of recipes to make any and every day are far more impressive than any other cookbook I own. Bravo!
